Self-care tips for exam period

Hi there! I'm not sure where the whole year has gone, but I also don't really have the time to think about it. Yeah, it's May and I'm sure most of you are facing a few exams. It can be a stressful time, it certainly was for me last year - but I managed to get back on track this time around and so far so good, I'm not too stressed out. I decided to share some of my go-to things when it comes to self-care.

1. Get enough sleep.

Obvious, I know. But I can't stress this one enough. It's fun when you do it once and you feel like taking over the world after an all-nighter. But it's just adrenaline and caffeine, not an actual superpower. You need to let yourself rest to be the most productive version of yourself.

2. Connect with nature.

We're spending so much time indoors while studying. The library literally smells of stress. All the cafes are packed too. Do you still remember what fresh air feels like? Durham has so many beautiful places to go on a walk and just be in the moment. Even if it's half an hour, going somewhere either with friends or alone and just taking some time to breathe helps put things into perspective. Not to mention that physical activity is bae.

3. Realise you don't have to stay at the absolute top of your game in all aspects of your life.

I'm gonna be honest here and this may not be the most popular opinion out there. My first thought was also to tell you to eat clean and exercise. But the reality is, sometimes you just can't do everything and the feeling like you're not put together is overwhelming. Try your best to let it go; if you feel like you need that chocolate bar, go for it. If you can't stand the thought of getting up early to go jogging, just don't. Of course, if working out and eating healthy is what helps you manage your stress levels and motivates you, you do you. But don't push yourself too hard. Just remember to drink enough water!

4. Go on a social media break.

I know, I'm posting this also on Facebook, Instagram and all the others. But on day to day basis I don't keep any social media apps on my phone. I noticed that I waste so much time just mindlessly scrolling through other people's lives and then I feel guilty. Taking a little break from your life online is always a good idea, but especially now, when you need some extra focus.

5. Find the little things that make you feel like you're doing something for yourself.

Aka treat yourself. It can be something as small as taking a longer shower or painting your nails. Or spending some time before bed reading your favourite poetry. Or calling your best friend. Or having coffee at your favourite place. Literally anything that makes you feel a bit pampered.

To help you a little bit with that last one, there's a giveaway at Soap & Glory Durham Facebook page. All you need to do is like our page and comment on the Facebook post sharing your number one tip for stress management during exam season.
